En ordre de bataille (en ligne)
Chaque peloton se déploie de la manière indiquée sur la page précédente, les pelotons les uns dans l’alignement des autres. La garde du fanion prend place entre le 2ème et le 3ème peloton, au centre donc (Selon le règlement, les pelotons sont numérotés de 1 à 4 en partant de la droite). Elle fait partie de la 2e section du 2e peloton et pour l’essentiel manoeuvrera avec cette section.
Le chef de bataillon se place à 20 pas derrière le centre du bataillon, les tambours à 15 pas derrière le centre du 2ème peloton. Les adjudants se positionnent à 8 pas en arrière du centre de chacun des demi bataillons.
Il y a de plus deux guides généraux du bataillon, un de gauche, un de droite, choisis parmi les sous-officiers, ils se placent respectivement à l’extrême gauche et l’extrême droite du bataillon, à deux pas derrière les serre-files, c'est-à-dire à 4 pas et demi derrière le 3ème rang. J’ai utilisé ici pour cette fonction deux sergents, pris respectivement dans les 1er et 2ème pelotons, et remplacés dans leurs positions par des caporaux.
Enfin, un caporal dit « caporal d’encadrement » est placé à gauche du 3ème rang du 4ème peloton (celui à l’extrême gauche). Ici ce caporal est prélevé sur le 4ème peloton.

C’est afin de compenser ces prélèvements que j’ai élevé l’effectif des 3 premières compagnies à 101 hommes au lieu de 100, chiffre qui pouvait paraître étrange à première vue.
En situation réelle on ne peut bien sûr pas compter sur le hasard et espérer que les effectifs permettront un déploiement symétrique. Il faudra alors transférer des hommes des compagnies les plus nombreuses vers les pelotons des compagnies les moins nombreuses, et parfois former quelques files incomplètes (les soldats ne sont qu’aux 1er et 3e rangs, la place au 2e rang reste vide).
Au commandement de EN AVANT ! donné par le chef de bataillon, le guide général de gauche se place à 6 pas en avant de la gauche du bataillon, tandis que le guide général de droite fait de même à droite. Le 1er rang de la garde du fanion se place à 6 pas en avant de la ligne de bataille, le 2ème rang de cette même garde prenant sa place au 1er rang. Les 3 guides généraux du bataillon (les guides généraux de gauche et de droite et le porte fanion) s’alignant ainsi.
Voyant cette disposition faite, le Chef de bataillon donne alors le commandement de MARCHE ! et tous se mettent en avant en partant du pied gauche.

Each platoon deploys as described in the previous page, the platoons lining up with each other. The pennon’s guard takes its position between the 2nd and the 3rd platoon (the drill regulations gives their numbers to the platoons from right to left). It is attached to the 2nd section of the 2nd platoon and will manoeuvre with it most of the time.
The Major (Chief of Battalion) stands 20 paces behind the center of the battalion, the drummers 15 paces behind the center of the 2nd platoon. The adjutants stand 8 paces behind the center of each of the two halves of the battalion.
Taken amongst the NCOs, are two guides of the battalion (“guide généraux”, they are not the same as the right and left guides for each platoon), one of the left, one of the right, they stand 2 paces behind the “serre-files”, meaning 4 and ½ paces behind the 3rd rank, on the left and the right of the battalion. Here I used for this purpose two sergeants, one from the 1st company and the other from the 2nd company. They are replaced in their positions as “serre-file” by two corporals from their companies.
Finally, a corporal, named “caporal d’encadrement”, whose role is to check on the battalion’s good alignement, is standing on the left of the 3rd rank of the 4th platoon (the one on the far left). I took this corporal from the 4th platoon.
It is to compensate for the deduction of these 3 NCOs that I lifted the strength of 3 of the companies up to the odd number of 101 men instead of 100.
Of course in real life situation, the strength of the companies will not always allow the deployment to be perfectly symmetrical. The Major (Chief of Battalion) will have to transfer men from the strongest companies towards the platoons formed with the weakest ones, and sometimes will have to form a few rows with only two men instead of three, one lining up with the 1st rank and the other with the 3 rd one, leaving a gap on the 2 nd rank’s level.
When the major orders FORWARD ! the guides of the battalion on the right and left, move 6 paces ahead of the two extremities of the ligne, while the first rank of the pennon’s guard does the same in the center (the second rank of this guard lining up with the 1st rank, leaving a gap at the 2nd rank’s level). The 3 guides of the battalions therefore set up the alignement (the 3 guides of the battalion are the battalion’s guides of right and left, and the pennon’s bearer).
When this move is completed, the Major orders MARCH ! and all start walking, stepping first with the left foot.
