Composition du bataillon
Le bataillon de Voltigeurs de la Garde représenté, aux alentours de 1811 (les premiers régiments de voltigeurs de la garde ont été crées par le décret du 30 décembre 1810), est organisé en quatre compagnies. Pour chaque compagnie on a en théorie :
1 capitaine
2 lieutenants
2 sous-lieutenants
1 sergent-major
4 sergents
1 caporal-fourrier
8 caporaux
1 sapeur
200 voltigeurs
3 tambours
Effectifs auxquels il faut ajouter l’état-major du bataillon, constitué de :
1 chef de bataillon (le seul officier monté)
1 adjudant major
1 sous-adjudant-majors
1 Caporal tambour
Bien sûr cette composition théorique varie légèrement selon les périodes, et les sources documentaires ne permettent pas toujours d’infirmer avec précision la présence de tel ou tel officier au sein d’un régiment donné.
Le bataillon représenté ici n’est pas en mesure de présenter un effectif correspondant à l’effectif théorique, comme cela était bien souvent le cas dans la réalité. Il manque, par compagnie :
99 voltigeurs (100 pour la 3ème compagnie)
1 tambours (2 pour la 4ème compagnie)
L’Etat-Major du bataillon est au complet.
Ne sont pas représentés ici : le vaguemestre, le chef de musique et les musiciens, les maîtres armuriers et les ouvriers, qui ne font pas partie du bataillon mais sont présents au niveau du régiment. Les sapeurs ne sont également pas présents.
Le général commandant la brigade est présent accompagné par l’un de ses aides de camp et le colonel du régiment.
Cependant malgré son manque d’hommes et de tambours par rapport à l’effectif théorique, l’effectif réel total du bataillon, 490 hommes, est tout à fait dans la moyenne des bataillons d’infanterie qui formaient les armées françaises du premier Empire.

The battalion represented here, as it would have been around 1811 (the first regiments of Guard Voltigeurs have been created by the decree of the 30th of december 1810), is organised in 4 companies. For each company we should have :

Nevertheless this theorical order of battle will see several minor modifications until 1815, and the sources we have don’t always allow us to deduct a clear composition for the battalions of Guard Voltigeurs during the war times.
The battalion presented here is not able to present a full theorical strength, as was very often the case in real life. Are missing, in each company :
99 voltigeurs (100 in the 3rd company)
1 drummer (2 in the 4th company)
The battalion’s headquarter is at full strenght.
Are not represented here : the baggagemaster, the regiment’s musiciens, the armourer and the workers, as they are not part of the battalion, but are included in the regimental level. The engineers are not shown either.
The general of Brigade is present as well, with one of his staff officers (aide-de-camp), and the colonel of the regiment (the chief of the regiment)
However, despite its lacking of 400 men, the grand total for the battalion is 490 men altogether, which places it at a very average position amongst the battalions which fought in the french napoleonic armies.
